seyDesign and Med-Designs bring back RetroFilm

RetroFilm UltimateIt recently came to our attention that Med-Designs had closed up shop. Being one of the original RapidWeaver theme developers, Med-Designs has been one of those names you've gotten used to seeing in RapidWeaver circles, so you can imagine our surprise to see that kind of institution shutting it's doors.

I promptly contacted Scott of Med-Designs and asked him what he had planned for his theme library. Before long we had struck up a deal to bring the works over to seyDesign.com and breath some new life into them. So it is with great pleasure and a certain amount honor to bring you the legendary theme, RetroFilm

RetroFilm, a highly stylized RapidWeaver theme from Med-Designs gives you the sense you are looking at a salvaged bit 35 mm "Safety" film. For the movie buffs, this old stock of a theme should fit your movie blogs or review sites just fine. Tickets please!

RetroFilm has been totally reworked to bring it up to date with RapidWeaver 4 and has also had a few feature enhancements. We've made all of the headers and footers RWmultitool. We have also added the much asked for width feature, which is fully compatible with all headers and footers. Enjoy this old theme like it's new all over again.

Updates at a glance:

  • upgraded to RapidWeaver 4 compatibility
  • refined code to validate
  • added Info.plist for end user version tracking
  • added release.txt for developer bug tracking
  • added IE 6 png transparency support
  • added RWmultitool ready headers and footers
  • added fully functional width options
  • refined color picker features
  • added large preview image
  • updated small preview image
  • added keywords
  • and much, much more...

ExtraContent Tutorials

Gary at RWT and SupportCasts.com was nice enough to put together a *eh-hem* human sounding screen cast (more human than our own) that further helps users understand the ExtraContent feature found in our latest theme, Gotem, a feature that we'll likely see more of:

NEW THEME: seyDoggy Gotem, with ExtraContent

Gotem UltimateThe Beatles once said, "I get by with a little help from my friends." That is definitely the case with the technology behind the latest theme from seyDoggy, Gotem. Our latest RapidWeaver theme is a sophisticated, contemporary RapidWeaver theme of extraordinary beauty and capability. But it also sports a new technology called ExtraContent.

ExtraContent came about when a handful of 3rd party developers got together to address the need for more content spaces in RapidWeaver. While the content area and sidebar are ample space for the vast majority of RapidWeaver users, there are some who want more flexibility to add content in ways keeping with todays modern web designs.

ExtraContent was the solution agreed upon by these developers as an easy means of end users adding more content to their site, in developer designated areas of ExtraContent enabled themes. While these areas will vary from theme to theme, the process will be very much the same. These developers worked closely to come up with a solution that would give all users a common experience.

I want to give a special thanks to Guiseppe from (((Bonsai Studios))) and Gary from RWT for sharing a common vision with me. You can look for new ExtraContent enabled themes from them VERY soon.

Features at a glance:

  • ExtraContent enabled
  • Two ExtraContent areas
  • 10 Custom headers
  • RWmultitool Ready
  • Split navigation
  • Width control
  • Header height control
  • 3 background textures
  • Dual sidebar control
  • Choice of font style
  • Color control
  • and more...

FormLoom could answer many dreams

FormLoomRapidWeaver, as great as it is, has always had one or two week points. Fortunately, through the wonderful foresight of Realmac Software developers, they have a wonderful SDK and strongly encourage add-on development (plugins, themes and applications developed from beyond the walls of Realmac Software). Some add-ons add features and functions never imagined in-house, while others simply improve upon existing plugins and exceed expectations of the original.

And that is the case of FormLoom (announced here) which takes the idea of the built in RapidWeaver Form plugin and and puts it in a whole other universe. Now consider that the original RapidWeaver form plugin has been plagued with many issues over the years and has been missing certain many rudimentary features. It's the kind of plugin that requires a great deal of attention, with server side programming, keeping things un-hackable, striping tags, etc... With everything else that RMS has going on, this little plugin has probably been a sore in their side. FormLoom is just what was needed in my view. It does (or will do) everything that a form plugin ought to do with the technology that it should be doing it with. In short, the forms it generates are proper web apps.

I have yet to get my hands on a copy but I am most certain that I will be able to put this thing into some heavy rotation. Go check it out for yourself.

THEME UPDATE: Simplistic R3 More Friendly With GoDaddy Hosting

Simplistic themeSimplistic for RapidWeaver has been updated to address some issues with users hosting with GoDaddy. The structure of the comments within the HTML code were triggering specific GoDaddy server commands (a weak method on GoDaddy's part if you ask me) that caused sites made with Simplistic to crash on GoDaddy hosting. The comments have been amended to counter this ill effect.

'sey'Design by Example, we're in print

Design by example

There is no greater flattery than to be made an example of so when we were asked some time ago if we would consent to being published in DesignMeltdown's, The Web Designer's Idea Book, I was truly honored.

Today, I received my copy in the mail and was thrilled to find these kind words on page 102 along side a screen shot on page 103:

"A great example of a unified design is the seyDesign site. It has an office theme, and everything flows together perfectly. The corkboard background creates a terrific foundation to tie the site together. It essentially gives the office supplies a place to exist."

Of course this isn't how the site looks today, but for this 2007 iteration of seyDesign.com to be forever immortalized in print is a true sense of accomplishment. All in all, RapidWeaver developers as a whole had a good showing in this book with various sites. Adam from Elixir Graphics has already written about his contributions. and I've heard there are more, I just haven't had time to look through each page yet.

THEME UPDATE: Acumen r3 fixes navigation shift

Acumen themeAt risk of completely echoing everything I said about cataLog the other day, I have for you the Acumen update that addresses the same problem, the mysterious shifting second level navigation. It was only a few of you going through this, or at least only a few of you who recognized the trouble enough to bring it to my attention. The fix was similar to that of cataLog, though not exactly the same so we have had to put Acumen through it's own bit of testing, hence the delay of it's release.

Again, I won't bore you with the details here, as I have gone on about it at length here, and having now labored through this issue twice I can say that I have about had my fill of DOCTYPE differences. Acumen is now fixed like it's sibling, cataLog, and we have now issued the update to Acumen.

Again, we would like to apologize for any inconvenience this has caused the group of you who had this occur to them but we are confident that you can now put this behind you. We want to thank John Coyne and Marten Claridge for all your work in guiding us to the problem and diligently testing our fixes along the way.

For more details on the fixes visit the Acumen update section or download the update directly here.

THEME UPDATE: cataLog r3 fixes navigation shift

cataLog themeI have very good news for both cataLog and Acumen users, that we have found the cause of the mysterious shifting second level navigation that was plaguing a small handful of you (no, I no longer consider you crazy). After an exhaustive search we were finally able to trace the odd occurrence to a conflict or difference in interpretation between the Strict DOCTYPE and the Transitional DOCTYPE and their respective roles in rendering the inline-block property.

I won't bore you with the details here, as I have gone on about it at length here, but I will just say that we were relieved to finally be able to replicate the issue ourselves and find a resolution to the problem. We have fixed and are now releasing the update to cataLog and the update to Acumen should come out later this week.

We would like to apologize for any inconvenience this has caused the group of you who had this occur to them but we are confident that you can now put this behind you. We want to thank John Coyne and Marten Claridge for all your work in guiding us to the problem and diligently testing our fixes along the way.

THEME UPDATE: wideNas r3 fixes footer links

wideNas RapidWeaver themewideNas for RapidWeaver 4.0 has been updated to r3 to correct a small issue where links in the footer were not clickable. We have also tweaked or added a few other bits here and there such as Info.plist which allows end users to easily view the themes version from Finder. We have also added support for release notes which will allow both developers and end users to keep track of the changes made to the theme over time. This will better allow us to track what version the user is using and help us deliver the best support possible.

For a complete list of the changes, go to the wideNas updates section or download the update directly.

We're back and ready to roll.

rapidweaver4.2We are back from or little vacay, and back on the horse, if you will, working through a pile of emails and such. On our agenda this week is to address a few bug issues in some of our RapidWeaver themes, namely a footer issue in wideNas, and a couple of mystery bugs that occasionally rear their head in cataLog and Acumen. We should have all of these addressed this week with their respective update installers ready for download.

And as always we are ever moving forward and onward with the theme developments and ideas. We have quite a list of them to get through over the next year or so so you can be sure to see one or two new themes from us every month. Yes that is an ambitious plan, but this is what we do after all, we might very well be the only full time RapidWeaver theme developers now who do nothing else.

And speaking of RapidWeaver, did you notice that RapidWeaver 4.2 has been released? Yes indeed. I have not yet tried it myself, but I have downloaded it and will be getting into it shortly. Learn more about it's release here.

We're off to London!

We're going to London!I'm off to the UK for a bit of a holiday. We take flight at 9:40 pm October 23 (that's today) and will be gone for about 10 days. We'll be back to answer your support questions on the week of November 1st. Remember that if you have any major concerns between now and then you can always try posting them the the Realmac Software forum and I am sure one of the kind and knowledgeable folks there will help straighten you out enough until I get back.

We'll try to keep you posted on our daily outings. That's likely to occur on Twitter so if your inclined to keep tabs on the leisure time of a theme developer geek like myself then you can come follow me.

Anyhow, stay safe and we'll catch in a few days time.

THEME UPDATE: Acumen r2

seyDoggy Acumen for RapidWeaver has been updated to r2. The changes are only slight with an improved print style sheet and a few tweaks here and there. One invasive change, however, is the removal of the copyrighted header images that accidentally made their way into the distributed version of this theme. If you relied on these images then this might be an aggravation to say the least, so I recommend you make backup copies of the images so you can reinstate them after the update installer runs.

NEW(ish) THEME: Varsis Studio Fade

Fade_safari_309w_261hIt's a hole new Fade! Aptly named for the fade-in and fade-out effect of the "sidebar" content neatly hidden under the header image, this Varsis Studio original first made it's debut on varsisstudio.com. However, with Chris turning more of his attention to RapidWeaver plugins, we were given the opportunity update and distribute the themes here on seyDesign.com.

We have spent the last few weeks bringing Fade up to RapidWeaver 4 standards as well as adding a great many features and functionality. Since this was our first time burying our heads in Fade's code, we decided not to go too overboard... for now. That's why we have decided to offer Fade as a Designer theme but keeping the door open for further development in the future.

New Features:

  • added color picker ability
  • added width options
  • updated header graphic to accommodate width
  • updated background options
  • added keywords
  • added font size options

Other changes and fixes:

  • redefined conditional comments
  • added release.txt to the list of included files
  • consolidated scripts to "scripts" folder
  • moved ie css files to css folder
  • added handheld.css, print.css
  • updated to be RapidWeaver 4.0 ready
  • added large preview image
  • updated small preview image
  • added General Styles set
  • changed font sizes to em's
  • updated header options to all custom
  • added support for %logo%
  • added %header% syntax
  • changed javascript library responsible for slide effect
  • moved js variable to slide.js file
  • changes opentab.png to smaller icon for localization purposes

THEME UPDATE: 2hadow r7 (now free)

2hadow_safari_309w_261hI will keep this one short and sweet; 2hadow (now at r7) for RapidWeaver 4 has been committed to the open source pool. Yes, that's right, it's now free for all to download, share distribute, etc... BUT, for those of you who purchased 2hadow we will still be offering full customer support.

So why free? 2hadow has been around for 3 years now. We're tired of looking at it wondering what we can do to freshen it up. We thought there was no better way to breath new life into this old theme then to turn it loose of you guys.

You can download the whole thing, or if you already have r6, just download the update installer.

Back from holidays, working on cataLog r2

We are back from holidays and have spent the better part of this morning working through support emails and phone messages. What you can look forward to later today is an update to cataLog Pro which will address a few FireFox 3 issues and a few bits of house cleaning.

We are still working with two customers who have issues rendering the second level of navigation. I am not sure what makes their situations different from everyone else's but I hope to pin-point those issues before letting this update out to the wild.

bloop! updated to r6

We've gone and made a very small change to our seyDoggy bloop! theme for RapidWeaver, bringing it up to r6. It became clear over the last few months that IE 6 transparency support in our navigation system was a nearly lost cause.

With the various hover states we needed for said system IE 6 was all but agreeable. Each and every fix caused more problems down the line. Considering the visual effect was only very minor, we decided that instead of forcing IE 6 to render the transparencies, we ought to just downgrade the IE 6 experience ever so slightly (with is actually an improvement now).

Visit the bloop! information page to learn more or go directly to the download section to download and install the update.

Just a reminder, location, location, location...

seyDesign%20updatesWe've been busy re-skinning all the most recent RapidWeaver theme update installers for a few reasons; 1) we want them to look pretty and follow suit with the rest of our new seyDesign 2008 look, and 2) we wanted the chance to emphasize that location is so important when getting set to use one of our update installers to update your seyDoggy RapidWeaver themes.

As you will read, no doubt the next time you update a theme:

"If you have moved your RapidWeaver theme to a different location, or if you have renamed your theme, you must restore it to it's original name and location before continuing."

The new theme organization features in RapidWeaver 4.0 are a great idea, and we are happy that this is now possible, however, you must remember to move your theme back to the ~/Library/Application Support/RapidWeaver root for any of our installers to work. Since there is no other constant than this folder, it is the only path we can be 100% positive will exist when compiling our installer apps to deliver the proper patches to each of our themes.

Also remember that if you are in the habit of renaming your themes (an older practice that dates back to RapidWeaver 3.1 and earlier), you must change the name back to it's original designation before running the installer. Again, the theme name is another constant we rely on when compiling our installer apps.

Member area access fixed.

Sheesh! Relaunching a totally rebuilt site is never without its complications but it's the little things that get you the most. Things like having the correct path in htaccess files that allow members to actually access the member area?

Anyhow, for any one who was having difficulty getting into the members area, please try the link in your emails again. It should work now.

Member signup is fixed

There were a number of people trying to sign up as seyDesign members over the weekend, unfortunately the signup form was borked and most attempts failed. I am pleased to announce the form has now been fixed.

If you were one of the ones trying to sign up without success, please give it another shot now.

Let's clarify what is covered under Creative Commons

The new seyDesign 2008 launch has been getting a great deal of media coverage and that's fine. However, it is being reported that:

"Users are encouraged to download, modify and improve these RapidWeaver themes and share them back with seyDesign and the general public. Themes there are covered under the creative commons license."
source: MacsimumNews among others.

This simply is NOT true and is an example of poor journalism if you ask me. The ONLY themes that we encourage this behavior for, and the ONLY themes that are covered under the creative commons license, is our Open Source themes (which currently only includes the "waVy" RapidWeaver theme).

I am terribly sorry about any confusion in this matter. It is clearly a case of misread press releases and extracting the bits that sounded the coolest.

THEME UPDATE: wideNas r2 fixes tab issue

Our latest theme, wideNas has been updated to r2 to correct a little typo in the index.html template file that was the cause of the tabs not showing up when previewed in RapidWeavers "Default" mode. The javascript responsible for making the tabs was looking for a class of "toolbar_horizontal" but the template had a class of "toolbar_horizontal " (note the space after the t and before the end quote).

We didn't catch this originally because we always develop in "Tidied" mode, as this was once the RapidWeaver default. Now that "Default" is the.. erm... default, we will have to change development kits to reflect this and hopefully avoid this needle in a haystack issues in the future.

New site. New theme. New ideas.

In this post: The New Site   |   The New Theme: wideNas   |   Two Theme Updates   |   Free Themes

The New Site

Welcome to seyDesign 2008, our biggest and most ambitious site porting ever. We have taken every single inch of our massive website and turned it inside out, all in the name of delivering to you the most effective RapidWeaver theme store and resource possible. You'll find everything about the new site familiar, yet much more fluid. You'll no longer have to jump from page to page to find out theme features, download more styles or get the latest theme updates. Each theme page is now it's own mini site with all of your needs and wants answered on a single page.

The New Theme: wideNas

wideNas screen shotAlthough a new site design is always cause for celebration, there isn't really a whole lot in it for you. That's why we are proud to present our latest theme, wideNas. Inspired by our popular badNas theme for RapidWeaver, wideNas takes the tabbed theme idea out of it's little box. The wide open layout of wideNas makes it ideal for just about any style of site, from high-tech to corporate or blog to boutique.

wideNas is what we now refer to as a Pro theme (more on such distinctions at a later date) who's pro features include such things as custom headers, width control, full color control, font selection and much, much more.

Two Theme Updates

viEw r3

We are excited to tell you about two updates to two great themes. The first one I want to tell you about is viEw, one of my personal favorites. viEw r3 is now available, bringing it up to speed with RapidWeaver 4.0, adding the large preview and keywords to assist in theme browsing and searching respectively. Learn more about viEw   |   Get the update

Tuo r4

The second theme I want to tell you about is Tuo, a RapidWeaver theme that changes the face of RapidWeaver theme development everywhere back in 2006. Tuo has had another radical change, rebuilt from the ground up to optimize performance, clean up code and extend functionality well beyond previous versions. Some of the new features include enhanced color control for all aspects of the layout (including top level navigation bar and the sidebar area), width variations, font selection and more. Learn more about Tuo   |   Get the update

Free Themes

What happens when a theme gets retired? It use to go in this lonely place on my hard drive called "_discontinued" but after having recently retired another theme, waVy, I could stand the thought of this theme rotting away until file corruption finally takes it's last whispering breath away. It's a perfectly good theme, and we like it a lot (I even use it on RapidWeaved.com) but it's just not popular enough to invest anymore time into further development of it.

So here is what we've decide to do with waVy and other themes like it; we have started a new section on the site, under the THEMES category, called Open Source. There, governed by the laws of Creative Commons, users can download, use, share, post back to seyDesign.com and redistribute our open source themes, absolutely free.

Conclusion

All in all I would say that this was a rather action packed blog post. Look for more exciting news in the coming weeks.

It's almost time to waVy goodbye...

We are doing a little house cleaning in preparation of the new seyDesign 2008 site relaunch. Now it's alway hard to say goodbye to a part of the family but there comes a time when we must just let go of the week ones to help us focus on making the strong one better. What I am getting at is this; we have decided to pull the plug on waVy once the new site gets launched. Support will continue as usual though, so if you are a waVy user, fear not, we have still got your back.

Goodbyes are never forever though, especially with the themes we hold close to our heart (we like waVy and have made use of for our own projects), but we have a lot of new things and revitalized things coming down the pike and waVy is just having trouble keeping up. Look for a new section of our upcoming relaunch that will harbor our homeless themes in the comfort and dignity that they deserve.

badNas r6 B update for glitchy updates

For reasons I can't explain, possibly with RapidWeaver 4.0 being a more sensitive soul or more attuned to to the files it must work with... whatever the reason, I am going to venture a guess that RapidWeaver 4.0 has caught what looks to be a corrupted update installer dmg. The original "badNas r6 Upgrade" dated March 26, 2008 worked, for all intents and purposes, in RapidWeaver 3.6 (though the error might have arose in some instances) but in RapidWeaver 4.0 it seems the corruption was too much to handle.

So to address this glitch we have simply rebuilt the update installer dmg and app and now all seems well by all accounts. If you have ever experienced trouble with badNas r6 in either RapidWeaver 3.6 or RapidWeaver 4, it is recommended that you update your theme using the "badNas r6 B Upgrade" dated June 2, 2008. You can find the list of badNas updates »here«.

RapidWeaver 4.0 and seyDoggy themes

With all the chatter about the impending RapidWeaver 4.0 release there is probably some question about our current RapidWeaver theme library and whether our themes are compatible with RapidWeaver 4.0. The long and short of it is that all but two of our themes are currently enabled with full RapidWeaver 4.0 suite of features while the last two are still compatible regardless. All RapidWeaver 3.6 themes work in RapidWeaver 4.0 as is.

That's not to say we won't be updating those last two themes, in fact they are updated already, we've just been too busy to release them yet. The same goes for our seyDesign 2008 site redesign, it's nearly ready to go, we're just trying to find the time to add two more new themes to the roster before we launch.

We had hopes of launching seyDesign 2008 before RapidWeaver 4.0 was released but that just won't be possible now. It's always good to be busy I guess, but sleep is good sometimes too.

FlipSide5.com launches

FlipSide5 LogoOur parent company, seyDoggy has been hard at work lately, as usual, and has recently been able to share their latest work with the world, FlipSide5.com

From tip to toe, seyDoggy took care of the whole package for FlipSide5; the graphics, web design, game icons and pieces, logo, etc... they did the whole thing. But enough about us...

Reston, VA—May 27, 2008—FlipSide5, Inc., makers of the popular web editions of Tic-Tac-Touch and 4InARow touch are now launching versions to download and install, allowing players to own these games on their iPhone and iPod Touch. Both these products, Tic-Tac-Touch and 4InARow touch, are designed to be amazingly "simple, fun and wow", refreshing these ageless classics for today's generation.

Gary speaks about the "Pro"

Gary from RapidWeaverThemes.com has just posted a commentary on what makes you a Pro when you call yourself a "Pro Theme Developer". He hits the nail on the head, it's NOT just those who do it exclusively for a living who can call themselves a Pro. It's more than that. It's all in how you conduct yourself and your business.

Some of the names you think of when you think of a "Pro Theme Developer" are myself (seyDoggy), RapidWeaverThemes.com, Elixir Graphics, RapidIdeas, BlueBall Design, Josh Lockhart, MultiThemes, Varsis Studio, THEME WEAVER... The fact of that matter is that only a few of us actually make themes and web designs for a living, exclusively, while others have day jobs, go to school and what not. But what makes them all worthy of the Pro title is their support and commitment their products, to RapidWeaver and to each other as a community of friends and developers.

For more on the subject go to Gary's blog and read his full post .

seyDOGGY (not seyDESIGN) gets a face lift!

seydoggy2008The mother ship has taken some time out to get a new coat of paint put on. seyDoggy.com, our little known parent site (and owners, lest we forget), has had a facelift in order to fight the obvious signs of aging. Yes it was time. The old girl was sporting a skin that was a throwback to 2005 (how embarrassing).

The new clothes that seyDoggy.com has donned is in preparation for an upcoming site launch that seyDoggy played a big part in. It seemed only fitting to announce this upcoming great new site from one that is as equally great. Stay tuned for more on this "new site" news.

Your questions and comments are always appreciated so don't be affraid to let us know what you think about the new seyDoggy.com

For those of you patiently waiting for more news concerning the upcoming seyDesign 2008 launch and the soon to be released Tuo update, please hang tight. We have a busy schedule at seyDoggy and we are addressing every ones needs in turn. I will have more news as it becomes available.

Tuo is seeing new horizons

The one and only, the original, first commercially available theme with split navigation is currently on the operating table undergoing some fairly major surgery... yet again. From it's early days in the spotlight as "Duo" it's first major transformation came when the code base was rewritten from scratch to bring the more stable, more feature rich "Tuo".

Soon after that came the major overhaul required to bring Tuo up to RapidWeaver 3.6 compatibility again bringing greater functionality to the already great layout. Now in preparation of the seyDesign.com site relaunch, we are taking yet another look at Tuo and what can be done to make it better and more flexible.

So how does variable with, variable header height, FULL color control sound to you? I thought you might like the sound of that. We have started from scratch (for real) and remapped this theme from start to finish. I think you'll like what's in store for this old girl.

Stay tuned.

Patience is a virtue... not a right!

Where have we gone? I know it seems like we've fallen off the face of the earth, but we haven't. On the contrary I, myself, have been so overwhelmingly busy it's hard to remember my own name at times. It's made it tough to do things like update my totally awesome seyDesign theme buyers with news of what to expect on the horizon.

So here is a list of things you can expect to see from us in the future (it's too hard to say when though):

  • New site:

We are in fact working on a new design and layout for this site. It is taking a while to port everything over, but we want it done right and we want to be super professional. I wish I could give you an accurate timeline of when to expect it but I can't. What you can do, though, is watch our theme upgrades as we are tweaking each one in alphabetical order, to make sure that they are all up to the new site standards.
  • New theme

We are sitting on a completed theme, waiting for the perfect time to release it. Ideally we want to launch it with the new site, but only time will tell.
  • New approach

It's too early to say yet, but we are thinking of a new approach to RapidWeaver themes. Nothing drastic. We are just a little frustrated at times with the total number of hours required to make the complex themes that we do. I can be limiting, at times, to be every theme for every person. We need to change that. Nothing big, but definitely significant.
  • Out with the old

This has been pending for quite some time now and I might as well make it public; we will no longer be selling WordPress themes... here. There is far too much confusion among the buyers and the two products, RapidWeaver and WordPress just don't co-exist well in the same space. The WordPress side of this operation needs to move, and it will when the new seyDesign site comes around.
  • SOTW no more

It is safe to say that if I were any more behind on the seyDesign Site of the Week portion of this blog I would have to change it to Site of the Year. I am sorry to have to do this but I think I am going to have to cut out that portion. I loved doing it but I just don't have the time. You are actually far better off submitting your site to RapidWeaved.com (the unofficial RapidWeaver site showcase) as you'll get a far broader audience looking at your site. Sorry for the inconvenience.

So what have we been up to that has us so quite? Lots of websites and graphics. Unfortunately I am not at liberty to speak of any of them but a few of them are pretty sweet. I did take a few hours of my schedule last week to quickly blast up a personal website to catch all of my random thoughts and activities. You can see the fruits of my labour at AdamMerrifield.info.

I hope to have more exciting news for you soon, and until then, happy weaving.

THEME UPGRADE: dogPress r6, Working like a dog for you!

dogPress for RapidWeaver
Every so often we need to take a hard look at what we've been doing and take note of where our strengths and weaknesses are. In doing so recently, we found that our dogPress is our most popular RapidWeaver theme... EVER! This actually came as a bit of a shock to us and made us feel a bit bad that we had neglected it. To reward you for your patronage and loyalty we decided that dogPress was long overdue for a much need (and free) upgrade!

Call us crazy or call us mad dogs, but we couldn't help giving the hottest upgrades to our most popular theme. We have added width options, header height variations, and all new color controls, including page colors!

It won't be long...er than it has to be

My apologies to all seyDesign fans. We are quiet at the moment and I suspect we will be for a while longer yet. We have new themes and updates to get out but we want to wait until our relaunch, our new seyDesign 2008 website. When that will be is hard to say, because as much as we would like to work on it all day and night, the reality is that we have large scale projects for clients that need to be addressed first. I am doing all I can to get a little done here and there and am making fairly good progress but a sight as large as seyDesign takes a long time to migrate over. We aren't simply changing the "look". We are changing the technology in it's entirety, we are remapping certain areas of the site, removing unused portions, making it easier to access other areas that are more critical to users, and the list goes on. Please bear us, your patience is appreciated.

Upcoming: new site, upgraded themes and more

It's always a good sign when the seyDesign blog is quiet. It usually means there is something brewing in the dog house, and indeed there is. For starters, let me just say that I am feverishly working on a brand new layout for seyDesign.com. One that is so gorgeous you won't believe your eyes. I would say that I am about 80% of the way there. And that brings me to the other items that have us busy. We can't really have an all new, top-notch, fine looking layout without bringing our themes up to the same calibre. We have been working over the last year to constantly improve our current theme library to be more flexible, more versatile, more stable and more attractive. This has been deliberate. We have known for some time that we want to bring seyDesign to the next level and we intend to do so with improved and upgraded themes to go along with our up coming new site design. One theme in particular has had so much potential since day one and has been very popular, but it's graphical limitations have always bothered us in-house. So we have recently strapped badNas to the operating table and are giving it's vital innards a complete overhaul. I don't want to go into detail, but you can expect to see a lot more flexibility with this RapidWeaver theme in the coming weeks. Also in the mix, we have a number of web site and graphic projects on the go and a custom theme to get done. All this and more is sure to cast this blog into virtual silence for a few more weeks yet. So until then, keep your sniffer clean.

THEME UPDATE: bloop! r5 fixes bugs and looks forward

We've released a new version of our RapidWeaver theme called bloop! that sees a number of fixes and changes. First off we have upgraded this theme to work through the next known version of RapidWeaver (from what we know). Secondly we have addressed a few bugs:
  • IE6 now renders 3rd and 4th level sub navigation
  • improved rendering of header images so the bottom doesn't get staggered of jagged.
  • updated the javascript used to round the header images, sidbar and footer containers
You can get the update [ here ].

Close to home

Hmmmm... There comes a time in every designers life when he knows his site and design is tired and do for change. Honestly we get bored quickly and time permitting we would probably change our sites daily.

Time isn't really permitting me, but I have concluded that I will go without sleep until easter in order to get seyDesign a fresh skin and I am well on my way. So you can imagine my relief when a colleague of mine who works at PUMP Communications pointed out this little gem of a site to me ↓:

Got Aqua?
I won't bother to point out the similarities, they are quite apparent on their own. All I can say is I am happy I will be moving on soon. Don't get me wrong, I like the site, and I like my own site, but I am tired of my own and since there are two of us now, I have all the more reason to move on.

Anyhow, go check out our Doppelgänger at Liquidesign.

I am happy to tell you that because of his genious and dedication to RapidWeaver and theme compatibility, there will soon be a 2hadow r6 update that plays nicely with all of Isaiahs plugins. Watch for it early this week.

THEME UPDATE: 2hadow r5 for RapidWeaver 3.6

2hadow for RapidWeaver 3.6
2hadow is our last theme to make it to the RapidWeaver 3.6 table. All the control you have ever wanted in the original Shadow and 2hadow themes is now a reality. There are no more graphics in the layout so there is a whole lot of opportunity available, like multiple widths, and color background with any page color with any border color... It's really quite liberating.

And, yes, you guessed it, drag n' drop interchangeable header graphics with RWmultitool Lite (free from http://www.rwmultitool.com), split navigation, logo placement and more...

NOTICE: This theme has trouble playing nicely with YourHeads Accordion Plugin (because of the conflict between Mootools and the script used to make this themes rounded corners). If you are an Accordion user, this theme is not for you.

2hadow is in the shop

Work has begun on the 2hadow update for RapidWeaver 3.6. As with all of the other updates, we want to bring this one up to full capacity with more options and flexibility the ever thought possible. Some of you might now be aware of the history behind our 2hadow theme. It all began in the fall of 2005 when we produced the original "Shadow" theme for RapidWeaver 3.1. That was the theme that got us started and shortly thereafter, in November of 2005, we started this store. Since then, Shadow went through many iterations, eventually being replaced by it's big brother "2hadow" (Shadow 2). 2hadow is getting old and tired. Born from a design now two and a half years old, 2hadow needs a little refreshing and a lot more flexibility. Stay tuned as we keep you posted on our old friends facelift. Shadow and 2hadow will live on.

January 17, 2008

Look for more styles

I have had a few questions come in about where to get the theme styles (.rwstyle) that I use on my showcase sites. They are now starting to show up right in the theme pages navigation. If you go to either viEw or bloop! you'll notice in the navigation that appears directly above the pinned up image of the theme you'll notice it says "Features", "Demo", "More styles", etc... Click on more styles and download only the ones you like. This feature will make it's way to all theme pages before long.

THEME UPDATE: bloop! r4 removes breadcrumb on request

For those that don't make use of RapidWeavers breadcrumb feature I have modified a few files that make the word "breadcrumb" hide when you opt out of using the option. This update only affects the index.html template and the theme plist. All other settings should be unaffected.

THEME UPDATE: viEw r2 for RapidWeaver 3.6

viEw RapidWeaver theme
viEw has been updated to work with RapidWeaver 3.6. There are a few changes and concessions in the name of progress but I think they are worth it. You now have full control over ALL color schemes from background to foreground, from links to text, from hovers to borders... everything we thought was useful to control can now change color. viEw can now adjust widths from 500px right up to 1000px.

And of course there is the usual seyDesign goodness that we like to wrap in our themes like drag n' drop interchangeable header graphics with RWmultitool, split navigation, logo placement and more...

Our 15 minutes of fame: a cameo in SCO and discounts for all

If any of you are avid podcast listeners (like me) and have subscribed to any mac related shows, chances are you've come across the name Don McAllister of ScreenCastsOnline. He's one of the podcast elite where screen casts are concerned and has set many a benchmark for others in the industry to aspire to. And it seems that everyone is trying to get him on the panel for this show and that conference, etc... That's why I was just floored when Don asked me recently if I had any RapidWeaver themes that made good use of RWmultitool (which as it turns out, happens to be our foremost consideration when developing themes). To make a long story short, seyDoggy themes have turned up in a recent ScreenCastsOnline episode (SCO0132 to be exact) covering RWmultitool, which is a complete honor as far as we are concerned. I dropped Don a note to thank him and asked if I could extend a discount code to you, my customers, so that a) you could catch our appearance in episode SCO0132, and b) because it's a great episode covering the ins and outs of RWmultitool which is so integral to our themes. Don was gracious enough to obligue. Just sign up to ScreenCastsOnline Extra using the coupon code "seydoggy" (without the quotes) and get 20% off the usual price of $49! The membership includes the next 6 months worth of shows in HD or iPod format, special members only shows plus access to over 130+ previous screencasts for immediate download. Thanks again Don!

The rights and rules according to Joe and Frank

What are my rights when I purchase a theme? I get this question a lot as do many others. It often appears in the RapidWeaver forums as well so I thought I would post my answer here for permanent record: If Joe buys a theme he can use it for whatever he wants, as many times as he wants provided that he does not become either a reseller/distributor of the theme or it's code. Joe can make a website of his own that makes him money. Joe can make a website for Frank that makes Frank money. Joe can get paid for the site he made Frank. Neither Joe nor Frank own the rights to the theme/skin/code (the "look") that makes Joes site or Franks look as sexy as they do. Therefor neither one can distribute this "look" to anyone else in any way, shape or form. If Frank wants to modify the "look" to his site he best be getting himself a copy of RapidWeaver and a copy of my theme. Otherwise he better leave it to Joe who purchased the rights to my theme in the first place. If either Joe or Frank break these rules then they both owe me their firstborn child (preferably a son because I have enough daughters already).

viEw is nearly ready for RapidWeaver 3.6

Our RapidWeaver theme, viEw, is in the final satges of it's RapidWeaver 3.6 overhaul. I am here to tell you that it is one serious upgrade from the original. You can expect to see color possiblities not previously imagined, width options and design refinements that will bring this theme to a whole new level. You can expect to see the new viEw sometime next week.
