Tragic news

I read in my RSS reader this morning some terrible news that one of our own has suffered a great, unimaginable loss. Ron Shiver, father of Adam Shiver of Elixir Graphics, passed away a few days before Christmas. He was 52, right around the age of my own parents; so sudden and unexpected. I am at a loss for words for anything meaningful to say but I am reminded of a quote said to me when my grandfather passed on, one which I was able to find again:
People do not die for us immediately, but remain bathed in a sort of aura of life which bears no relation to true immortality but through which they continue to occupy our thoughts in the same way as when they were alive. It is as though they were traveling abroad.

~Marcel Proust
If you wish to extend your sympathy to Adam, I've set up a thread on the RapidWeaver Support forum here.

Merry Christmas

I just wanted to pop in quickly and wish all of you a very merry Christmas and all the best for the holiday season. I've been through various festivities already and am heading to another in a few short hours. I fear they are going to have to roll back to my desk with a stick at the end of the holidays... I'm more stuffed than the turkey! All the best and have a happy New Year!

THEME UPDATE: bloop! r3 fixes external link issue

We've replaced a windows.onload event with an addLoadEvent to combat the conflict bloop! was having with the built-in RapidWeaver javascript that was preventing an external style link from opening in a new window. This update only affects the index.html template and the theme plist. All other settings should be unaffected.

Download the update installer here.

THEME UPDATE: edGy r3 fixes IE7 bug

Our RapidWeaver theme, edGy, has been updated to fix a minor rendering issue experienced in Internet Explorer 7 (IE7). The bug caused the title and slogan to be misplaced as had the logo disappear into nowhere land.

Download the update installer and patch your version in just a few clicks. This update applies to all edGy themes purchased after December 2, 2007 and before December 11, 2007.

I love RapidWeaver

I am sure by now that you could just make such an assumption about us but it has to be said; I LOVE RAPIDWEAVER. As I am sure you recall we just celebrated our second birthday as one of RapidWeavers premier theme developers, by having a birthday sale (which has since ended, sadly). As a general rule a company tends to break even on sales, moving more units but at a discounted price. Usually it's just to draw more people in, get more eyes on your site and product and raise consumer awareness of who you are. In our case we just wanted to give a little something back to the RapidWeaver community for putting up with us for two years.

This sale was different somehow. For some reason it struck a chord with you guys/gals. I don't know whether it was a show of support, or the release of the new theme, or the time of year, or what... But your support in this sale saw us move approximately 7.5 times the number of themes in any given 3 day period than we have ever moved before! I am not one to brag... I am never one to brag... but that is a serious number of themes pushed out in a very short period of time!

For what ever reason this all came about, I have only you, the RapidWeaver community, to thank for it. So in the spirit of the fast approaching holiday season, thank you! And I mean that with every pixel of my heart.

Birthday Sale

seyDesigns second birthday
Today is seyDesigns 2nd Birthday! 2 years flying the seyDesign flag! 2 years of innovation, 2 years of continual improvement, 2 years of fresh ideas and new features. We can't begin to tell you how honored we are to still be around and to be recognized as one of the premier theme developers. 2 years ago there weren't many of us around, the market consisted of only a handful of us such as RWT (then owned by Dave Cantu), Med Designs, BlueBall and New Ending Studios. Now the field has grown to include the likes of Pioneer themes, Elixir, ADHD, Vortex, Multithemes, Bonsai, Varsis, RapidIdeas, THEME WEAVER, Butella, 2bitoperation, and the list goes on.

I want to thank all theme developers for our continual support of each other, our collaborations and our many exchanges. I want to thank all of our customers for believing in us and I want to thank the entire RapidWeaver community for being the greatest bunch of people on the planet.

In appreciation to all of you, seyDesign is having a 50% off appreciation sale for the next two days. Enter the code "birthday" to your cart and automatically get 50% off everything in the store. The sale ends at midnight on December 3rd.

The big 400!

Our members list has reached new heights today; 400 legitimate, reachable members! Sure we have come close in the past but with each new mailing that goes out, I have to delete a half dozen names from the list, ones that get bounced, fail or otherwise just don't exist. But having recently cleaned the list and with a few new submissions today, we are finally in the position to confidently boast our 400th member! Yeah! You can sign up for member discounts on RapidWeaver themes too by going to our member signup page.

Keeping you on the edGe!

A very new spin on an old theme is due to arrive soon. We are talking about edGy, which is soon to see a dramatic update. Not only will it have the full RapidWeaver 3.6 feature set, including color picker options, but it will have many new features that will make this new version infinitely more versatile than the original version. I don't want to give away too much at this point, but one of edGy's main drawbacks was it's inflexible size which many found too narrow... you can expect that to change in the new version. Stay tuned.

New snippet: 3 column layout

WHAT IS "3 column layout"?

"3 column layout" is exactly what it sounds like, it allows you to insert 3 columns directly into your Styled text page, HTML page, Blocks page, ect... Where ever you have room to put 3 columns you can easy add this snippet. Heck, you can even put this in your sidebar, footer or any place in RapidWeaver that allows you to enter text. Want 4 columns? Leave your sidebar on. There really is no limit to the way's you can play with this code.

HOW TO INSTALL

To install "3 column layout", double click the rwsnippet or drag and drop the file into ~/Library/Application Support/RapidWeaver/Snippets.

HOW TO USE "3 column layout"

Find "3 column layout" in your snippet panel (cmd+5 or View > Show Snippets), select it and drag it into your project. If you are using this snippet in any styled text area (Styled text, Columns, Blocks, Carousel, Accordion, Lockdown, Blog, RapidBlog, FAQ Maker, etc...), you need to select the snippet code from beginning to end and type cmd+period or Format > Ignore Formatting.

Now all that's left to do is replace the Lorem Ipsum text and headers with your own content.

Download "3 column layout" here

New cart discount code

There are three questions we get a lot
  1. Do you sell theme bundles?
  2. Do you have just one discount code I can use instead of having one for each theme?
  3. Do I get a discount if I buy all your themes?
Well now the answer to all three is now YES... well sort of. We now have cart discount code that you can apply to anything you purchase; so whether it's one RapidWeaver theme, four themes, or all themes you can get 20% off no matter what. So make your own bundle and get 20% off.

To get your discount code, sign up to be a seyDesign member.

I should start calling this site of the month for all the time (or lack thereof) I have had lately. This site would be one of the reasons I have been so quite lately. It's kept me busy figuring out the best storefront options and what not. So I am proud to show off Torudog.com as this site #14 in our site of the week category. Toru - Rock your dogs world, is all about rock star style for dogs and selling what they preach. I had a lot of fun working on this project. We're back

We at seyDesign are well rested and back on the horse after a glorious, uncharacteristically warm Thanks Giving long weekend. My wife and I took the kids to the Oktoberfest Parade (it's a Kitchener thing) for which we normally have to dress in warm clothes and winter coats and bring hot chocolate and blankets to keep warm. This year we were looking for ways to keep cool, dressed in our shorts and T's wearing sunscreen and looking for ways to get shelter from the beaming sun!

Anyhow, we are refreshed and ready to tackle more RapidWeaver goodness in the coming weeks. Stay tuned.

October 08, 2007

We feast for a day

Happy Thanks Giving to all those in Canada. We are closed for the day to celebrate Thanks Giving with all of our friends and family. We'll be back to our regular hours of operation on Tuesday and get to some of your support questions. Until then, Chris and I are happily stuffing our faces with turkey and cranberry sauce. Take care and Happy Thanks Giving.

New RapidWeaver resource launched today

rw-updates-09-24-07
A new site by seyDoggy called RW Updates has been launched today. The site, a daily digest of RapidWeaver developer news, is aimed at power RapidWeaver users looking to cut to the chase and get development news on theme and plugin updates, new products, new snippets and new smart blocks right from the developers mouths.

RW Updates allows visitor to quickly skim through what's been posted by their favorite RapidWeaver developers, Realmac Software and also the Add-ons section of the Realmac Software site without having to wade through countless forum posts, countless feeds and surf countless sites. RW Updates gives you a light recap of what's new, quick and easy.

Something wicked this way comes

new RapidWeaver resource coming soon
There is a new RapidWeaver resource on the horizon, one that will make many power RapidWeaver users happy. seyDoggy saw a need for some "consolidation" in the information streams in order for RapidWeaver users to keep up to speed with what is going on in the RapidWeaver community. This consolidation process has led to some neat new technologies that we have released here recently, that were a byproduct of what seyDoggy had going on in the background. Look for an official announcement later today.

Showcasing the Showcasers

Here is a novel concept; it's a new css showcase site, sort of, a little tongue in check though:"Most of their names can be resumed to "CSS" followed by another word that smells tasty, it's kind of confusing I think. So why not showcase these showcases?"

Our RapidWeaver Snippet, "Show Recent Posts" has been updated

snippets
After a lengthy walk through with a fellow RapidWeaver user trying to set up a site our recent RapidWeaver snippet, "Show Recent Posts", it became painfully clear to me that I take a great deal of web stuff for granted. So I have modified the commenting in the code snippet to answer a few good questions you might have and I have also modified the README file to reflect those new instructions. The code has stayed the same, just the instructions have improved.

Minor update for our bloop! RapidWeaver theme

We noticed today that bloop! wasn't validating properly (very odd for us). Anyhow, we've squashed this little nuisance and posted the update here. You can download the patch installer and it will take care of all this for you.

OOOOPS!

{ **EDIT** at the time of publishing, Dan Alban did in fact use the dogPress theme and RapidWeaver to make his site, however, Dan has since switched to iWeb. }

Maybe to you and me, the average Joe Schmoe, the name Dan Alban doesn't mean much, but to someone entrenched in the latest LightWave version 9 would be hanging on Dans every word in his latest book, Inside LightWave V9. Dan is an accomplished author with books on such subjects as digital photography for 3d animation, Luxolgy and of course a multitude of books on LightWave, an industry standard 3D animation rendering software used in countless productions on both television and the big screen.

Dan is also a 3D animator which one can only assume, is why he's such an expert on LightWave. I sure hope Dan knows about the latest version of dogPress for RapidWeaver 3.6. His 3D images could now become his headers. ;)

This is an old theme but it just goes to show you how versatile some of the older stuff was. The Webfactory uses our old abLe theme (discontinued) to deliver their business message. It's a clean, classic look that stands the test of time.

ButtonBuilder is Back!

ButtonBuilder is back
ButtonBuilder is back! Now free and open source, AND with it's own new sexy website. This is the app that I first knew Realmac Software for. Back in the day when I was hand coding every site I made I was looking for a little app to take the tedious job of making web buttons off my hands. That's when I found ButtonBuilder and soon began a long and lasting working relationship with Realmac Software.

Hats off to the the boys at Realmac Software and RealmacForge for bringing this little gem back to the center stage!

Keep it moving

new polaroid idea
I was getting a bit tired seeing the same old shots in the polaroid at the top right of the page. I've had a few ideas as to what I could put there but finally settled a site of the week screen grab rotating through with each screen refresh. It's clickable too, so when you click on the polaroid, you get taken to the site of the week index.

Now since there are only three at this time, I've had to augment the library with a few screen shots of of our theme demo pages, but at least it keeps things interesting with each visit.

Site of the week #3

Site of the week number 3
Using our popular Tuo theme, Kevin Spencer, a 5th Grade teach is responsible for this site, run.spencersrus.com, the ongoing saga of a man on a mission. Spencer hoped walking could help him memorize Bible passages. He was too distracted to read at home. So he used a Sony Walkman on long walks to help him focus. Soon, he began running. He weighed 260 pounds in the spring of 2002. By that summer, he had memorized two chapters and lost more than 80 pounds in three months. He also began a running program at Raleigh Court Elementary School during school and after school on Thursdays... Read more.

Safari 3 is not the RAM sucker it used to be!

Safari-3-18-06-07

Ahh the frustration is finally over. I got the Safari 3 beta to finally work for my (thanks to Glenn Thomas) and got updates for all my favorite browser plugins like Safari Tidy. Now is the new Safari faster? Meh... it's really hard to pinpoint a microsecond here or there, but since they tell me it is, my mind at least humors the possibility and convinces me that it is. But all of this faster nonsense aside, where I am really happy about the changes in Safari is it's use of RAM. It seams the days of 256 Mb and 500 Mb RAM sucking are gone! This is great, leaving more RAM for for the other apps that really need the extra like Photoshop on Rosetta! It didn't seem to matter how many tabs I opened or how many windows I would open, the RAM usage never climbed higher than 150 Mb (5 windows open with 10 tabs in each window), but for regular usage, RAM consumptions was steady between 70 Mb and 85 Mb. Kudos to Apple for finally addressing Safari's biggest crutch.

Tuo r3 RapidWeaver theme update

Tuo r3 RapidWeaver theme update (Tuo r3 patch installer)

Tuo for Rapidweaver has been patched to resolve an odd rendering issue in IE6. We have also added full blown support for and png graphic inserted anywhere by the user. IE6 rendering performance has been considerably enhanced as well.

On the lighter side, we have changed the tag cloud rendering from a standard list to more of a cloud appearance in keeping with the tag “cloud” idea.

IMPORTANT!You need to install r2 prior to this install. You must also have a working copy of “seyDoggy Tuo.rwtheme” in your “~/username/Library/Application Support/RapidWeaver/” folder for this update installer to work.

WWDC and the amazing Safari 3

Safari-3
So we've seen the keynote, and we've played around and we've let all this wonderful news digest for nearly a day now. If you haven't heard (and couldn't tell by my small image here), Safari 3 public beta is now out, but further to such great news is the fact that it is available for Microsoft Windows XP and Microsoft Windows Vista!

How great that would be if the uptake of Safari on Windows was so fast that we could drop support for IE6 and IE7 all together, but sadly that may never come to fruition. So what this means is, we'll continue to support the worlds most used browser, IE6, until 2014 when Microsoft themselves finally pull the plug.

What else can we do about this though? There is no reason not to help speed up the process and let Windows users know just how amazing the Internet is on Safari. So help spread the word, Digg it, blog about it, email your friends about it, tell your family about it. A web browser is the most used piece of software on a computer today, it should be the best piece of software.

Introducing Tuo for RW 3.6

tuo
We are proud to introduce the most ambitious upgrade to that we have ever attempted. The minds behind seyDesign bring you Tuo for RapidWeaver 3.6, a vastly more flexible, feature rich Tuo than ever imagined before. Some of the highlights include color picker options for the background, page, side navigation box, breadcrumb bars, links, text and more.

We've also reworked how the sidebar background works (previously grey at all times). We've now made it semi transparent so that the sidebar background now adopts a shade of your page color. And what's more, you now have the option to turn the sidebar background off altogether. The breadcrumb backgrounds have also been modified (previously grey at all times). Now you can select any color you wish for the breadcrumb bars.

To learn about these new features and more, visit the .

Tuo is in the shop.

At one time I thought the biggest change that the original Duo theme for RapidWeaver could ever undergo was that of the transformation from Duo to Tuo. On the inside this was true. Under the hood of Tuo was a whole new core of code. On the outside, though, the changes and advancement in features was welcome and refreshing but not radically different.

The same cannot be said for what is about to be released though. What we have coming up is the upgrade from Tuo for RapidWeaver 3.5 to Tuo for RapidWeaver 3.6 and I am here to tell you that things have changed! We listened to all of your input about what we could do to make things better. We took that input and tried everything we could to implement it all.

You won't be disappointed with the new Tuo coming soon.
